Why do some image areas flash on the camera monitor during playback?

Several Nikon digital cameras feature a 'Highlights' warning option in the image playback mode to warn users when the highlight areas of an image are too bright and will appear overexposed and thus void of detail. When this option is selected, pure white areas will flash as illustrated in the image below. This feature is useful when photographing white objects that have detail in the highlight areas, for example a wedding dress which needs to be retained.

To retain detail in affected highlight areas, reduce the exposure slightly, the image can later be edited to restore the correct brightness to the dark and mid tone areas of the image. This can be done using the 'levels' tool in Photoshop or Nikon Capture or Digital DEE in Nikon Capture 4.x. while retaining detail in the highlight areas.

The 'Highlights' display can be turned on or off from the camera menu, please see the camera's user manual for more information (D70 'Highlights' display is on by default and is not switchable). It is possible to quickly cycle though the photo information display to view the image without the highlight indicator flashing. To do this press the multi selector to the left or right depending on the camera model until the playback display you require is shown.
