What is an aspheric lens?

Aspheric lenses were introduced by Nikon in 1968 and we continue to be a leader in their use and design. As the name implies, aspheric lenses have a complex, non-spherical surface. Aspheric lenses are designed to reduce coma and other types of distortion and also allow some lenses to be made smaller and lighter because they reduce the number of standard (spherical) lens elements required.
