AF-P lenses use the latest Stepping Motor technology to move the lens focus quickly and quietly making this type of lens ideal for shooting movies as well as still images. "P" in the name AF-P is derived from the pulse which drives the motor.
The ability to change focus settings in the camera menu rather than the switches on the lens barrel offers photographers a more intuitive way to shoot. Some cameras released before the introduction of AF-P lenses require a firmware update to make lens control possible from the camera menu as listed below.

*1 The camera does not offer the "Manual focus ring in AF mode" custom setting for enabling/disabling focus ring operation in autofocus mode.
*2 The AF-P lens built-in vibration reduction function cannot be disabled.
*3 If the standby timer is allowed to expire, the focus position will change when the timer is restarted, requiring refocusing.
Specifying longer standby times is recommended for manual focus photography (remote photography, fixed photography using a tripod, interval timer photography, etc.) and in other situations in which the shutter may not be released immediately after focusing.
*4 If the AF-P lens has a lock button: If the camera is turned on with the lens retracted, the camera will display a "Lens not attached" message, "F--", "△F", or other warnings with certain lenses.
*5 Requires mount adapter FTZ / FTZ II
