How are camera image sensors affected by strong light, such as that from a laser or the sun, penetrating a lens and striking them?

Do not leave the lens pointed at the sun or other strong light source for an extended period. Intense light may cause the image sensor to deteriorate or produce a white blur effect in photographs. Further, an image sensor can be damaged by extremely strong light, such as that from a laser. Photos or movies then recorded with the damaged image sensor will exhibit bright spots or lines in portions of the frame that correspond to the damaged portions of the image sensor.
Please take all necessary precautions to ensure that strong light, such as that from a laser, is not allowed to penetrate the camera lens and strike the image sensor in live view mode or when recording movies.
In addition, the camera should never be set down or left in a place where strong light, such as that from a laser, may penetrate the camera lens without the lens cap attached.
